Once a month, ElderSparks does a workshop at a small Alzheimer’s facility in northern NJ that often feels like a sorority house. Most of the residents are women who invariably greet us with warmth and enthusiasm. Indeed, whenever we’re inspired to do something just for the fun of it, we know where to find the perfect audience.

Memorial Day weekend — and just in time for summer — we came laden with colorful foam sun visors and bags full of decorative materials (e.g., pipe cleaners, plastic straws and eyeglass frames, faux rhinestones and eyeballs, assorted geometric shapes, and markers) for embellishment. Below is a gallery in which the women model their creations — this season’s must-have beach accessory. (Privacy concerns prevent us from showing their sunny faces.)

Cynthia is a private aide who is totally in synch with ElderSparks, and a pleasure to have in the room. In addition to assisting her client and other residents, she fashioned a visor for herself that rivals anything worn at Queen Elizabeth’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations. With a little watering, it looks as if something could actually grow on it!
